Mr. Simon’s hit play The Stuttering Preacher is now and feature film directed by and starring Javon Johnson.
Clarence Jackson the III Pastor for the New Zion Baptist Church preaches the gospel of free love and he has a reputation for loving women and women DO love him. He is the leader of the flock literally. He feels love and love making is the answer to the world’s problems. Well just not that simple but that is the Genesis so to peak. The thing is he stutters, and he is trying to convince sweet fine Efay that he is a sincere God fearing man. Efay, is a strong-minded, no nonsense Black woman who does not want to hear it because she has heard it all before, until she meets the uncensored mouth and mind of Reverend Clarence Jackson. The comedy and drama centers around Efay and Clarence as the pursuit for sex, love and happiness takes us on a ride with a stuttering preacher and a liberated stubborn woman. Who will win? Who will loose? Or will they both end up with a box of chocolate? Call it a modern day “Taming of the Shrew,” if you will.
The Haitian Revolution is arguably one of the greatest events in world history, and many, most people do not know anything about it. It is the only time in world history that a people liberated themselves from bondage via a violent revolution. Led my Toussaint L’Overture, Jean Jacques Dessalines, Henri Christophe and others, the Haitian army defeated the British, Spanish, colonial French and Napoleon’s mighty armada, creating the first free Black nation on the western hemisphere. This history is dramatically told in Levy Lee Simon’s epic drama, written in three full length plays: Part I – Toussaint – the Soul – Rise and Revolution, Part II Dessalines – the Heart – Blood and Liberation, and Part III – Christophe the Spirit – Passion and Glory. The trilogy, which Levy Lee never thought would get a production was produced in 2001, 02 and 04 by the Robey Theatre Company in LA, helmed by founders Danny Glover and Ben Guillory. All three plays were directed by Ben Guillory. Levy Lee recognized the significance of the untold story that needed to be told and brought to the masses. The LA productions were applauded, and critically acclaimed earning several NAACP and Ovation Award, wins and nominations. LA audiences, that included many, many Haitians, loved the plays. Who knew so many Haitians lived in LA? It has always been Levy Lee’s dream to have the trilogy presented in NYC. It is believed that the NY audiences, including the Caribbean population, the NY Theatre crowd, and every day people, would support it one thousand percent. So, here we are, twenty years later and, Levy Lee still believes more than ever that the trilogy will be a hit in NYC. Partnered with successful Black Theatre Companies such as, Shades of Truth and New Heritage Theater, and continuing the collaboration with the Robey Theatre, a powerful team has been created. We like for you to come on board and help us make this huge dream a reality. We like our chances and believe passionately in them.
